Marielle, doctor anaesthetist in Haiti

Marielle, médecin anesthésiste à Haiti

This is Marielle’s story: she works as an anaesthetist in Haiti.

The role of an anaesthetist on an MSF mission is more or less the same as in France, but is structured differently. In Haiti, there is a lot of post-operative care as many patients are polytraumatized. With the equipment available, the mission can perform all sorts of operations, from reconstructive surgery to osteosynthesis. Marielle has respirators and reliable monitoring equipment to perform anaesthesia. Health care personnel in Haiti are highly trained. Marielle has a supervisory role, but teamwork and collaboration are still very important. Nothing is more rewarding for Marielle than seeing patients heal and leave the hospital.
