Plastic / Ortho Surgeons (W/M)

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organization created in 1971 that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural disasters.

MSF offers high-quality surgical and medical care to populations whose vulnerability is increased by political or health crisis contexts.

MSF is urgently looking for SURGEONS in the following specialties:

  • Plastic surgeons specializing in burns or reconstructive surgery

  • Orthopedists who specialize in reconstructive surgery or with skills in plastic surgery

for its activities in Gaza, Syria or Haiti.

Context

MSF is reinforcing its capacity to provide large-scale surgical care in Gaza, Haiti and Syria:

 

  • We are strengthening our surgical teams in Gaza in response to the immense need of patients in terms of burns and orthopedic surgery.

  • In Haiti, MSF is planning post-burn reconstructive surgery campaigns.

  • In Syria, the opening of the country allows the sending of international staff to support local surgical teams.

Mission

In order to ensure the continuity of the humanitarian response put in place, provide surgical and post-operative care to adults, youth and children injured in the clashes or bombings in recent weeks or days.

Main responsibilities

The surgeon performs urgent surgical procedures and post-operative surgical care.

1) Surgery:

  • Performing urgent surgeries

  • Coordination of surgical activities and responsibility for the quality of interventions

  • Proper maintenance of the operative report

  • Responsible for informing the patient about the proposed surgical procedure and his or her consent and confidentiality.

  • Close collaboration with all operating room staff and interaction with doctors and nurses in the emergency, intensive care and surgical departments and support of the team of national surgeons.  

2) Postoperative follow-up of patients:

  • Visits and follow-up visits in the surgery and intensive care department in collaboration with the anaesthetist and the unit managers

  • Post-operative prescriptions relating to his specialty in compliance with the MSF protocols of which he is the guarantor (antibiotic therapy, dressing protocol)

  • Compliance by himself and his employees with the hygiene rules concerning the protection of patients and staff.

  • Rational use of medicines.

In all areas of his activity, the surgeon ensures that medical confidentiality is respected. they exercise vigilance and inform their manager in the event of a medical error.

Profile required

Diploma: Hold a degree in reconstructive plastic surgery or orthopedic surgery with expertise in burn.

Experience and Skills:

  • Two years of work experience after graduation

  • Registration with the Order of Physicians

  • Willingness to work in multicultural and multidisciplinary teams in often complex contexts requiring respect for local culture and safety rules

Languages

B1 level required in French or English. Knowledge of Arabic is a good asset

Status and conditions

  • Full-time fixed-term contract.

  • Field contract, level 9 according to the MSF OCP field salary scale; remuneration based on seniority and experience.

  • MSF care: transport, accommodation, food + daily perdiem; social security, medical care, vaccinations, insurance including repatriation 100%

  • Mutual Psychosocial assistance before, during or after the mission, as needed

Duration of assignment: 2-3 weeks on-site availability.

Location: Gaza, Haiti, Syria.

Positions to be filled: as soon as possible
