Deploying aid and relief across thousands of kilometres requires a complex organisational structure and high levels of resources.
The Médecins Sans Frontières operations department is divided into units. Each unit monitors ongoing operations and responses to emergencies in the countries for which it is responsible. Alongside this, the other departments – medical, logistics, finance and human resources – provide support to operations.
There are three separate levels to mission organisation at Médecins Sans Frontières:
Head office Cell: this team manages all operations within a group of countries.
Capital Coordination Team: this team works alongside the Head office Cell to support the field teams.
In the field: MSF may have several projects within the same country. Each project may deal with a different medical issue, but will operate using the same organisational structure. Teams in the field work directly with local health care workers and communities.
