A career path at MSF français

Becoming a volunteer with Médecins Sans Frontières can be a one off experience or the start of an MSF career. We encourage long term commitments from our volunteers who, through their work in different intervention contexts, develop new skills and knowledge and can go on to take on management positions at headquarters.

Follow up and training

Once recruited, each volunteer receives personalised follow up. The field recruitment team organises Welcome Days. Run by headquarters staff, these three days are an opportunity to find out more about the organisation and discuss MSF engagement, work and living conditions with volunteers back from the field. Briefings on positions, the mission and the intervention context will complete departure preparations. Specific training courses are provided to acquaint non-medical profiles (administrators, logisticians) with the organisation's tools, etc.
Throughout a career path with MSF, each volunteer can participate in different medical training courses (nutrition, epidemiological, AIDS, etc.) or cross-sector courses (administrative management, medical management, healthcare for populations in precarious situations, etc.). Over 500 people are trained internally by our teams every year.

Varied experiences

As soon as a volunteer returns from his/her (hereafter referred to as his) first mission, MSF offers him postings to other types of programmes in different contexts. After one year, the volunteer becomes a salaried employee: he builds up skills in project management, situation analysis and team management and can access other responsibilities. In practice, someone starting off as a practitioner with a small team to supervise can progress to medical coordinator, logistics coordinator, financial and/or human resources coordinators, project coordinator or even head of mission positions (More information on coordination jobs)

Help with re-conversion

At the end of their time in the field, MSF supports the reconversion of its staff members by helping them draw out the value of their experience so as to integrate back into a classic job market:

  • The employment contracts used facilitate reintegration into the French social security system (nevertheless, MSF cannot be held responsible for issues relating to the expatriate's personal status).
  • Partnership with Résonance humanitaire offers support for reconversion (access to a network of contacts): a skills review, application of an official skills validation, and in some cases, training.

Some former MSF volunteers have reconverted into the medico-social sector. The skills they acquired in project and team management along with their capacities to adapt are highly appreciated in this field and fit well with professions in the associative sector, the cultural sector or people support services.
